Ants. When I think about ants, I remind myself not to forget my weekly immunization shot to counter my severe allergy to fire ants. When I see a line of ants in our kitchen or bathrooms, I cringe and exclaim, “Honey, we have ants!” My dear husband steps into his ant warrior mode and before long there are no ants. During my daily search for wisdom, I read in Proverbs 30:25 that there are four small animals that are unusually wise. Ants were one of the four. Those words grabbed my attention. “How could these little pests, in my opinion, be so wise?” So I did a little research. I read that ants are social insects which form colonies, or communities, ranging in size from a few dozen living in natural cavities to highly organized colonies consisting of millions of ants. There are three kinds of ants in each community: the queen, female workers, and males. One writer said that these ant communities, or societies, have a division of labor. They communicate between individuals and have the ability to solve complex problems. I was amazed to learn that although small, some ants can lift 50 times their body weight. Another impressive fact about these “wise” little animals is they are not lazy. They work in the summer to store food for the winter. One of the most remarkable facts about ants is their ability to work together, even forming bridges with their bodies if necessary to provide more direct paths for other worker ants to efficiently carry food, leaves, and twigs back to their nests. What happens to an ant that gets lost? One writer said that if it loses the pheromone trail back to the colony, the worker ant is doomed. It could eat and survive on its own, but why? It has lost its purpose in life. We each have a purpose for being alive and God wants us to be wise. He speaks to us even through His Creation, even through the ants, and illustrates what a healthy community looks like! Written by Arlette Revells (Photo Credit: Shutterstock) |
