When I was in grammar school, I was fascinated by chickens. Once I had a hen who had three eggs in her nest. She sat on her nest faithfully. The hen was fiercely protective of her nest. However, we were such good friends that she didn’t object to me often peeking under her wings to see her eggs. After sitting on her nest past the usual 21 days, the number of incubation days required for chicks to hatch, I became suspicious that her eggs were rotten. Sure enough, they were. I carefully removed her three rotten eggs and replaced them with one duck egg, an egg my Aunt Sue gave me. I wondered what would happen. The hen didn’t give up. Not only did she sit on the nest 21 days for her first eggs that didn’t hatch, but she also sat an additional 28 days, the number of incubation days required to hatch a duck egg. One Sunday morning I lifted one of the hen’s protective wings, and there it was, the most beautiful yellow duckling I’d ever seen! The hen was a proud mama! She had taken in a stranger and lovingly cared for him. I felt like a proud “mama” too! I was so excited that I picked up the little quacking duck in my hands and smiled as I gently stroked its soft fuzzy down. It looked just like the picture above. Did anyone smile when you were born? I can see the excitement and proud smile on the faces of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, the Three-in-One, as they shared the joy of designing you and me in our mother’s womb. We were knit together with yarns of creativity, strength, and purpose. We were designed to fill our place on this earth–a place that no one else can fill. I want to be sure I don’t miss big opportunities because of making small decisions. To enjoy the life God intended for me, I must believe that I am a miracle of God and, that God doesn’t bring me to the stage of birth and then desert me to live on my own. Hebrews 12:6 tells me that He will never leave nor forsake me! He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.
