I had no idea what I would capture in my camera lens that morning. But soon I knew. I got a beautiful shot of Ms. Finch as she came in for a landing. She focused on where she was about to join a group of feeding finches on our deck railing. I was so happy for Ms. Finch when the group of birds made room for her!
How many times have we wondered if we will be considered valuable to a group we’d like to join? Those feelings start early in life. The first time I remember that feeling was in the third grade. It was recess time, and the teacher marched the whole class out to the softball field. She appointed two of the most competitive ball players in the classroom to be the captains. The rest of us knew the captains would take turns picking their team. For sure, they’d pull the best ballplayers from our group first, one at a time. I don’t know about my classmates, but fear rang so loudly in my ears I could hardly hear the captains as they called out the name of their next selection. None of us wants to be the last one chosen. Being in that position doesn’t do much for our self-worth, does it? We’re deeply hurt when we feel ignored or wonder if others think we have very little to offer. The good news is that God chose each of us before we were born. He knit us together in our mother’s womb. No matter how we feel about ourselves or question what others think about us, the fact is we’re important to God. He calls us His masterpiece. When we realize our importance to our Heavenly Father, it’s then that He can draw us into the intimate relationship with Him that He created us for, and, in turn, nudges us to show others the same mercy and kindness He shows us! Since you have been chosen by God who has given you this new kind of life, and because of His deep love and concern for you,you should practice tenderhearted mercy and kindness to others.”(Colossians 3:12) It’s interesting how much more attractive we become when our focus is outside of ourselves, and we realize that OUR PLACE is in God!
